Barefoot on Earth

Barefoot on Earth. As summer draws to a close, I am happy thinking back to all the time spent directly on soil. Our family was dirty most of the summer. Toes, feet, legs, torso, arms, face and hair covered in all sorts of soils: fertile loams, young sandy dunes, old clays, peaty spodosols, chalky limestone and compost. Proudly, I can count the number of showers I took on two hands. Most of the time I rinsed off in the Atlantic Ocean, Lake Michigan or Boulder Creek. I love dirt, soil, earth, land, gumbo, terra firma, commonwealth, good country, whatever you call it. ⠀
