Forum #1 : Should hydroponic production be considered organic?
We will discuss the hotly-debated issue of whether hydroponic production should be considered organic. This is a complex topic that spans the economics of organic production, the power of certification and labels, technical definitions of 'organic', the nutritional density of food, small business vs. corporate interests, rural & urban forms of agriculture, and perhaps most importantly, what is the role of soil in growing food? Conversations often weaves across these issues, and conversations are often messy. This Forum is timely because the National Organic Standards Board will be deciding whether hydroponics should be certified organic in early November.
